Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore often referred to as the Lion City and Little Red Dot, is a state in Southeast Asia and the only island city-state in the world.

It is located one degree (137 km) north of the equator, south of the southernmost part of the continent of Asia, and in the subcontinent of Malaysia. A diamond-shaped island comes along with 62 other islands in the territory of Singapore.

Extensive land reclamation since independence resulted in an increase of 23% (130 km sq) inland in the country, and its greening policy led to the creation of tropical vegetation, parks, and gardens.

Stamford Raffles founded Colonial Singapore in 1819 as a trading post for the East India Company after the establishment of the British Raj. The island was then ceded to Britain in 1826 and the island became part of the Straits Settlement. During in the Second World War Singapore was controlled by Japan.

During World War II, the Japanese Empire occupied Singapore and held it from 1942 to 1945. After the war ended, Singapore went back to British control, and the right to self-government was raised to the level and eventually, Singapore merged with the Federation of Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963.

However, as a result of social unrest and disputes between the ruling People's Action Party of Singapore and the Alliance Party of Malaysia, Singapore was separated from Malaysia. Singapore became self-sufficient on August 9, 1965.

In 1963, they achieved independence from the United Kingdom by forming a union with other former British territories, but then two years later it was expelled due to differences of opinion, and thus Singapore became a sovereign nation in 1965. After a few years of unrest in the beginning and despite the lack of natural resources, today Singapore is developing as fast as other Asian countries.

Singapore started to work on a modernization program, which focused on building a manufacturing economy, constructing vast government properties, and spending substantially in public education, in the face of high unemployment and a housing shortage.

Singapore's economy has grown by an average of nine percent per year since independence. By the 1990s, it had become one of the world's most prosperous countries, with a highly developed free-market economy, strong international commercial ties, and the highest per capita GDP in Asia outside Japan.
