Many countries still survive with a shortage of donors. One of the main aims of this day is to be aware of as many people as possible so that no one craves for the donor.

The medical specialists of the time knew that blood played a vital role in the body, and losing too much of it can put the patient in danger. So it was started to experiment, and different donors were born that contributed their blood so that others may live.

Government and national health authorities responsible for providing adequate resources and infrastructures to increase the collection of blood from voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, even after facing a lot of challenges, blood donors in many countries have continued to donate blood and plasma to patients who need a transfusion. This extraordinary effort during this time highlights the crucial role of a well-organized system, brave voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors in ensuring a safe and sufficient blood supply whether it’s normal time or emergency time.

They save millions of lives and give the gift of new lives to others.

History

Richard Lower was the first person who examined animal blood circulation and found ways to stop blood clotting.

He succeeded in getting the blood of a medium-sized dog. And then transfused large mastiff blood into that dog. But both dogs recovered without facing any problem. He received a lot of praise for this effort.

At that time there were some strange beliefs about blood, and the first human transfusion involved the blood of a sheep in a patient who was suffering from a mild form of dementia.

Many questions were raised and condemned by the authorities on the work of inserting blood of animals into patients. And this practice was outlawed.

It was a Doctor who brought back this technology into modern medical technology. He started working on it day and night. After some time, their hard work paid off and saved the life of a woman. He made 10 transfusions and saved the lives of 5 of them.

Then he published and told everyone how he did it. The first event of World Blood Day took place in 2012, with the aim that people should know how important blood donation is.

Since then, this event has been declared by WHO, World Blood Donor Day, celebrated every year.
