With the desire to make social amicability and comprehension, Her Holiness Shinso Ito, the Head Priest of Shinnyo-en, initiated a Lantern Floating Hawaii service on Memorial Day, in the year 1999. 
For the initial three years, the occasion was held at Ke'ehi Lagoon on the south shore of O'ahu. In 2002, the festival was moved a couple of miles down the coast to Ala Moana Beach ever since the festival is celebrated at this place.

The Buddist ceremony begins with the sound of the Pu, then it is followed by playing of the Taiko, which are the Japanese drums and an Oli, Hawaiian chant. This act blesses the area, and spiritually prepares it for the start of the event. The first lantern to float is the parent lanterns. This parent lantern symbolizes gratitude, and it carries prayers for all. 

Then the collective lanterns are let to follow the parent lantern. Finally, the individual lanterns are let to float in the water. Some of the aspects of the ceremony are Floating of Lanterns symbolizes sending wishes of happiness and peace to the people who passed and give courage and hope for the people present.

Bells are rung during this ceremony, and it symbolizes people to focus on their thoughts and signifies that it is time to float the lanterns. Shomyo is a traditional Buddhist chant that includes a Western chordal harmony for this Lantern Floating Ceremony.

Six main lanterns are laid on the water, and it carries prayers for all souls, including the endangered and extinct plant and animal life. The community leaders from different areas light a fire to symbolize their commitment to creating harmony.

Shinso Ito, the head of Shinnyo Buddhism, blesses the event and all those attending the festival. The offering of food and water is a symbol of spiritual nourishment to the souls that are remembered. The scattering of flower petals portrays love and respect for those being honored.

You can bring your food and non-alcoholic beverages for this festival. So carry your food. If you are not able to attend this festival, no worries, you can watch the festival live on the Hawai'i News Now KGMB and also on from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

If you want to secure a nice spot on the beach, you need to arrive early. The lanterns which are floated on the sea are retrieved once the festival is over, and they are recycled for the next year. So don't attach unwanted materials on your lanterns.
